So, having bought a Freeview box from Argos, and been very impressed with the picture quality it gives on my vintage Phillips TVCR combi, I've decided to buy a DVD player for my bedroom. This isn't as hedonistic as it sounds - the model I've bought costs £59.99, which is what I usually spend on myself on a cinema trip to London.

I've done a little bit of research, and I'm optimistic that the Macrovision and Multi-region handset hacks work - I won't find out for certain until I take it home tonight and connect it up. The inaugural DVDs will be "Sports Night" and "A Very Peculiar Practice", and if it all works properly, I'll be able to record them onto VHS...

Well, the Multi-region hack worked, but the Macrovision one didn't - but for some reason the Macrovision picture flashing only tripped in on some of the DVDs that I've tested. All the BBC DVDs, Network's "A Very Peculiar Practice" and BMG's "Our Friends in the North" played back fine, as did some of my Region 1 disks - "Citizen Kane", "This is Spinal Tap", "Charade" and, most surprisingly, my last purchase, "The West Wing".

The player is here to stay, and I'll be investigating other ways round Macrovision over the weekend - in between watching episodes of AVPP.
