The wonderful Freakytrigger site, in its ongoing mission to analyse every number one record since the official charts began, has reached "Dancing Queen". It's (typically) terrific critique, and explains to me why the song can bring tears to my eyes.

Dancing Queen is significant to me, too, but I'd have to couch the reminiscence in more personal terms. It's a song, to me, of the summer of '76, and reminds me of crouching by my parents' or our next-door-neighbours' parents' bed, with our neighbours' children, sharing our discovery of Dial-a-Disc, for which the number was 16. It's associated with the shift from Nottingham to Northumberland at the end of that year, and all the cultural changes that were going on then.
