Our budgeted sales for Christmas Eve = £10,000. Our takings today = £19,000.

I've never seen the Games & Puzzles shelves completely empty of stock before. Lots of sudoku been given this year, I guess.

I hope that this earns you some points in the eyes of head office.

The Regional Manager was in today for two hours, and was delighted. It's not just the sales, it's the availability - it's a huge team effort to put the stock out constantly, but it's also my responsibility to order the correct titles with adequate "coverage" (but not to over-order leaving us with roosting turkeys, such as 'Lewis Hamilton - My Story'.)

That being said, there's no point ordering the stock for next day delivery if it stays in the stock room - so our unpacker too gets an ovation. The stockroom this afternoon had a cache of Richard & Judy books (the titles are all embargoed until Thursday) and not much else. Goodness me, we even sold a Dalek Hybrid Voice Changing Mask today - we've been stuck with a pack of four of them since November 1st...

...and of course we have an exemplary Children's Bookseller (leaving next month), an Academic and Business specialist who knows just how to source that Spanish textbook so that it arrives in time for the course; a cashier who runs the cash office so that we didn't run out change or book tokens this year... and Christmas temps who have been thrown in at the deep end in more ways than one over the last few weeks. I am incredibly proud of them all.

Hey there!
Great takings - congrats to you and your team! I hear on the grapevine that you're in charge at the moment?! What happened to your illustrious leader? and while we're at it, what's happening to that children's bookseller of yours?
Anyhow - a happy new year to you and yours. Here's hoping to meet up for a coffee soon and catch up on movies and Who!

Hello! I am indeed 'acting up' at the moment, until January 31st at least. As for the circumstances, I have to be circumspect in public. In private, however... is your email address still yourname4@ntlworld.com?

Karen is indeed leaving, off to be a lab tech for Lonza. I've been teasing her that she'll look just like Abby Sciuto off NCIS, but that doesn't work, because she doesn't know who Abby Sciuto is. (Google image search proves the point, I think.)

I rewatched the second half of Doctor Who today, and think it's definitely the best of the Christmas specials - some Strong (ahem) direction, much better than his work on the Dalek stories last year. Kylie was a bit lightweight in it though; she didn't bring any of the pizzazz that I'd expected.

Nope, not seen that one yet. I did get to see a sneak preview of "No Country for Old Men" on Sunday, and, if you like that sort of thing - the Coens doing a suspense-filled offbeat crime drama, beautifully shot with outstanding performances - then it's terrific. I do indeed like that sort of thing and think it will get at least two Oscars.

I'm deleting the comment with yeractual e-mail address in it to deter any passing spambots - and I'll be e-mailing you the story of my own personal Voyage of the Damned very shortly!
