Strangely, Barclays did EXACTLY the same thing a week or so beforehand, but it didn't hit the headlines. Northern Rock were unlucky that it happened to them on a slow news day.

I remember the Barclays story, but they had better PR, I think - all Northern Rock's management went to ground.
