I didn't post a review of "The Sound of Drums" because I thought it was all over the place in tone, but it would possibly become more coherent when viewed as part of a whole. Well, it didn't really, not much (although I'll give myself a brownie point or two for anticipating, nine weeks ago, the re-appearance of Gallifrey on screen, after the Doctor's very picturesque soliloquy in "Gridlock").

I'm in two minds, really, about the finale. Lots of striking moments and three or four terrific scenes, but the whole thing falls apart if you think about it too deeply. e.g. a year has passed and Martha has turned into Lisa/Yvette from Secret Army, whilst everything onboard the Valiant is still more or less the same as it was at the end of "The Sound of Drums".

The Scissor Sisters musical opening was a pop-culture gag too far for me - more Doctor Who Confidential than Doctor Who. Not too sure about the point of having a wizened old Doctor ('Dobby the House Doctor' (c) David MacIntee) in a cage either - it just denied the viewer more screen time shared between John Simm and David Tennant (both of whom were magnetic towards the end during their final confrontation sequence.)

I thought Freema was great, and I'm sorry she's going - there are heavy hints in on the audio commentary on the website that she'll be a regular in Torchwood or back for x number of episodes next year. In the mean time, hopefully Lucy Saxon has a companionable cousin somewhere who looks exactly like Alexandra Moen.
