Nevertheless, the paper trail may have had an effect, as yesterday a chap from the building site went up on the roof with a big bucket of sealant. The Centre Management property guy has assured me that, if the fix holds, then he'll start to do something about the water damage. We're now waiting for the next showers to see if we need to hang on to our four litre litter bins.

I read about the allegedly excessive promotional charges to publishers your employers are imposing in Private Eye this week. Presumably roof problems are endemic across the business?

Very possibly - having taken possession of the kingdom last year, all the 'converted' stores are due a visit from a site fabric surveyor. A bit like William the Conqueror and the Domesday Book, without the twenty years in between. After that the board will decide whether to institute Preventative Property Maintenance visits, which are the norm for legacy stores. If they do then I dare say the rate card prices quoted might become even more vertiginous (not just through the roof but up to pylon level.)
