This is the first election night in years (UK or US) where I haven't stayed up late watching. Blame the evil lurgi. Disturbingly, compared to the years when I've sat up, the absence effect I've noted in many sports fixtures (Pellegrina enters the room, the other team scores; Pellegrina stays away, it doesn't) seems to have worked and the Democrats have taken the House. Yay!

They only need one more Senate seat to deprive the Republicans of a majority, as of the independents Joe Lieberman in Connecticut has said that he will vote with the Democrats, and the new Vermont senator, Barnie Sanders, is a socialist, so voting with the White House seems unlikely there.

Stephen King was particularly concerned about the Senate race in Virginia - the Democratic candidate is, among other things, a novelist and an Emmy Award winner.

The Virginia senate race seems the murkiest as well as the closest of the lot. Apparently the FBI are already investigating voting irregularities and reports of intimidation.
