Cambridge, Day 2, morning
Jul. 28th, 2006 11:33 amSo, yesterday afternoon I mooched around Heffers, Borders and Waterstone's, found that somebody else had snapped up the Steven Saylor books I was after, and went back to the tent with "Altered Carbon" (Richard Morgan), "Revelation Space" (Alastair Reynolds) and "Adam Runaway" (Peter Prince).
Got back to the tent just in time for the thunder storm, which lasted half an hour, and was a bit scary - very loud, sheet lightning, heavy rain. The shower finished, conveniently enough, at 5.45, giving me time to get over to the club tent for the gentle, ballad/Americana music of Emily Barker - a really beguiling singer, supported here by the Red Clay Halo (fiddle, cello, accordion). Highlight was her a cappella version of "Oh Death" from "O Brother Where Art Thou", given a real kick by being sung by such a young voice, full of life. You can hear what she sounds like here :

...further musical encounters were postponed as the 5 am start caught up with me - I went back to the tent and collapsed in a dazed heap for the rest of the night. This may also be related to my first pint of Festival Ale, which tasted quite mild, but who knows??
