Well, I think that episode of Doctor Who showed exactly how to do "evil" - Gabriel Woolf's voice and his calm delivery an object lesson to Roger Lloyd Pack. And the orchestral score made it feel like a feature film in places.... the folk/acoustic motifs are very evocative, even if they are cribbed from Firefly/Serenity.

Good supporting performances from the guest cast, but, Mr Woolf - that was scarier than your performance in "Pyramids of Mars", and that's a real achievement!

I only caught the last ten minutes and so am waiting for the repeat on digital, but was immensely heartened by the evidence that it actually felt quite spooky. (Also, Tennant's weak chin was mostly in a space helmet, cutting down somewhat on the histrionics.)

Certainly the best episode of the series so far, though I think the scientists would have winced! Still, that was almost always the way...

I did my first Sunday shift for over a year today, and had a chat with a Mum whose two daughters (four and six) were fascinated by the Tardis sound pens. "It was quite scary last night," I said.

"They'll be watching it with Daddy later this afternoon, " she replied, " - they can't watch it at seven before bedtime. We've tried that and it's no good!"

I can forgive RTD, David Tennant and co. any number of artistic mis-steps when the series is connecting with the child audience to such a degree.
