Goodnight, Mr Tim
Apr. 13th, 2020 07:30 amI was working out how many times I went to see Tim Brooke-Taylor perform on stage and realised I had seen him with either Bill and Graeme or as part of the Clue team as many times as my favourite singers or bands. And artists such as Aimee Mann, Stacey Earle, Indigo Girls, Squeeze, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Hot Club of Cowtown and Show of Hands make their livings by touring.
Recordings of Clue in 1998 (Kings Theatre, Southsea) and 2000 (Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth) ; the touring 'best of' show (2017, Basingstoke Anvil) ; Q and A sessions at the Prince Charles Cinema (DVD launch, 2003) and the National Film Theatre (screening of The Movies some time in the early 2000s) ; and the career retrospective "The Goodies Still Rule OK" at the Oxford Playhouse in 2007 with

The Goodies were as an important part of my childhood as Doctor Who, the theme tunes triggering a similar Pavlovian response. I aspired to be Graeme (smart, hardly ever ruffled, 'scientific') but was more like Tim, specifically - and he always played this brilliantly - at his most bashful. Silliness is not celebrated enough, be it a duel with scones squirting jam in Cornwall, riding a pommel horse bucking like a bronco, or trying to make Jack Dee corpse by feeding him lines which he has to cap with the words "In my pants".
