Festival notes
Oct. 28th, 2004 11:07 pmJust a quick entry... I'm halfway through my week off for the London Film Festival. So far I've seen:
1) Garden State - very sweet American indie in with a similar feel to "The Station Agent". Zach Braff ('Scrubs') stars and directs, playing a tripped out version of his Scrubs character. Lots of small, quirky (and visual) gags, lovely indie-folk-pop soundtrack... recommended.
2) Bad Santa - very bad taste but screamingly funny anti-Xmas comedy, produced by the Coen Brothers, and starring Billy Bob Thornton as a mean, melancholic drunk with an annual Xmas scam. He's very good - a performance not too far away from "The Man who Wasn't There". Toxically gross in places, with highlight being three people kneeing each other in their respective groins.... recommended.
3) TCM Classic Shorts - short film selection : one dud, two average, two pretty good, and one excellent.
4) The Incredibles - exhilarating ; Pixar's best since Toy Story 2, or, more pertinently, Shrek. One of the best of the year.
Tomorrow - House of Flying Daggers, the Second Floor Mystery ; Sunday - Surprise Film (Sideways? The Life Aquatic?)
