gervase_fenWell, as expected, my attempt to read all three shortlists ahead of tonight’s awards was derailed by "Natchez Burning", three times the length of other nominees. Still, here are the Fen Dagger Awards 2014, based on experience of seven and three quarters of the twelve finalists. UPDATED WITH THE RESULTS....
My Gold Dagger goes to “Keep Your Friends Close”, which also wins the prize for Most Unusual Murder Weapon. “The First Rule of Survival” is a very close runner-up (and I won’t be too disappointed if it wins).
WINNER - "This Dark Road to Mercy", Wiley Cash.
The Steel Dagger goes to “Apple Tree Yard”, which scored highly in the category of best self-deluding first person narrator.
WINNER - "An Officer and a Spy", Robert Harris.
The New Blood Dagger goes to “The Strangler Vine”, which tied with “The First Rule of Survival” in my personal category of “Best First Novel in What Will Hopefully Become a Long-Running Series”.
WINNER - "The Axeman's Jazz", Ray Celestin.
