(Gold, longlisted.) A dazzling South African set thriller, opening with the discovery of the bodies of two boys who had disappeared seven years before. Colonel De Vries, the lead detective then, catches the new case - a tough as nails, obsessive, Harry Bosch-esque dinosaur in the politically turbulent world of the South African Police Service.
Paul Mendelson has written a remarkably gripping and chilling tale, which kept me up into the small hours to find out whether De Vries would get the justice that he sought. A set piece sequence in an underground bunker was a highlight for me - pure, nerve jangling suspense. Definitely a book I would shortlist.
