Two long catch up phone calls last night, one from Penny, one from Nigel.

I’d had an e-mail about Penny’s wedding on Wednesday – I knew she had always wanted a quiet, unfussy ceremony, and also knew that her parents (and especially her mother) had set their hearts on a big family occasion. Penny (and Brian) got their way on this one – Nuneaton Registry Office at lunchtime on a January afternoon, and not some big jamboree down in Portsmouth.

It turns out that I’ve given them a pretty good wedding present already – well, not so much as ‘given’ as ‘sold on’. I parted with both my DVD sets of “The West Wing” a fortnight ago and they’ve watched all the episodes they hadn’t seen before in about five days flat.

I asked Mrs Huston if it felt strange having a new signature, and she does miss the dangling double pp’s from her previous name. We’ve made plans in March to see “Roman Holiday” at the NFT and anything else that doesn't make it to our local cinemas ("Pieces of April" possibly).

Nigel needed cheering up after ten solid hours in the projection booth, with only one other person to help him out. He's figured out how to burn his Minidisc bootlegs on to CD, so we planned out which Cambridge concerts we both wanted : John Prine and Eric Bibb in particular.

Here's my chance to test this lj cut stuff:
There's less than an month to go now until the annual UCI Oscar night party, and we're both pretty clueless about who's got the best chances.

Until the nominations were announced I was certain that Rene Zellweger would win Best Supporting Actress. But if the voters actually rate "Seabiscuit" as a better film than "Cold Mountain", then I doubt that a majority of them will get through the first hour of CM to her performance. Patricia Clarkson is wonderful in "Pieces of April", and it's about time she won something...

The songs are going to be terrific on the night - especially Mitch and Mickey's duet, the singing Triplets of Belleville, and (the winner I hope) Alison Krauss performing "Scarlet Tide".

Best film - LOTR? But it's not really a film by itself, is it - it's one third of a nine hour epic which holds out the promise of being improved on the eventual DVD release.

So, my initial predictions are :
Film - Mystic River; Director - Peter Jackson; Actress - Charlize Theron; Actor - Sean Penn; Supporting Actress - Patricia Clarkson; Supporting Actor - erm...

I wonder if that worked. Lets have a look.
