5/5. Enthralling. Everyone's clearly pulled out all the stops in service of a cracking script - I particularly relished the flash-forwards and flashbacks, Murray Gold's music, the War of the Worlds-green UFO, but above all else the performances from David Tennant, Freema, Jessica Hynes and Harry Lloyd.

Agreed. A welcome and real change in tone and method for the series, and surely an award-chaser.

I spent the first 15 minutes under the impression that Martha was supposed to have lost her memory, too, and the next 15 trying to figure out if she had or hadn't, so cannot call it an unqualified success! But definitely a pleasant change. I liked the creepy scarecrows. Will they keep it up in the second part, though?
