So the various CWA Dagger awards were announced last week - the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger went to Roger Hobbs' Ghostman, which was one of the runners-up to Derek B Miller's Norwegian by Night for the New Blood Debut Dagger.  The Gold Dagger for best crime novel of the year went to Mick Herron's Dead Lions.

I've been sidetracked from reading the shortlists by other entertainments - 'new' old Doctor Who, William Boyd's Solo, new issues of Ellery Queen / Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, About Time 7, new seasons of The Mentalist, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and some quality movies (Rush, Sunshine on Leith).

Going back to the Daggers, it's worth recording how poor the associated ITV3 television programmes have been.  Watching Bradley Walsh as host has provided many behind-the-sofa moments, such as when he asked MyAnna Buring to discuss Diana Bretherick's City of Devils "from a female perspective", or structuring a routine at the awards on the premise that Neil Stuke stars in a TV show called Silks.  (He doesn't).  The Media Monkey diary item noted how many re-takes he required whilst on presenting duties on the night.  This is a real shame, as the pre-packaged insert items about Harlan Coben, Linwood Barclay, Endeavour etc. were quite watchable, and the prize ceremony included David Tennant's latest gracious prize acceptance speech.
