'E-Shorts' read in January / February
Feb. 25th, 2013 03:37 pm A Big Hand for the Doctor felt to me like a DWA comic strip with Hartnell's head (and big hand) pasted over, John Canning style, artwork of Matt Smith. I was entertained by Eoin Colfer's narrative voice and invention, but couldn't buy into the story as happening to the First Doctor. (It's been too long since I've read the TV Comic stories to say if Eoin Colfer was harking back to that specific characterisation of the Doctor, but I don't think so.)
The Nameless City gets the Second Doctor and Jamie just about right, and reads like and entry from an anthology Target might have put together in the 1980s (specifically 1985, to co-incide with the transmission of The Two Doctors - one of the macguffins of The Nameless City is shared with another Season 22 story.) The Lovecraft references are laid on by the bucketload - and highlight one of the underlying influences at work in The Doctor's Wife. More like this, please.
