So, "Little Britain", then - I was able to complete my ticklist of Goodies' sightings for 2004, as the interviewer for the event was Graeme Garden, a comedy hero of both Matt Lucas and David Walliams. "I remember when The Goodies was moved to Mondays and it clashed with Cub Scouts", said David. "I was devastated." Graeme nodded : "Questions were asked in the House, I think."

GG introduced the session by observing that this particular comedy partnership was celebrating it's tenth anniversary - "Nine years of obscurity and one year of success", observed Matt Lucas. These days, as well serving a comedy apprenticeship at revues, on radio, and at clubs, aspiring comics can also put together a body of work on various obscure and forgotten satellite channels. We were shown a clip from a Paramount Comedy Channel show called Spoofovision, which had Matt as Tony Hart and David as Mr Bennett (desperate trying to invent business to get into camera shot). After Tony Hart creates a sponge painting masterpiece he holds it up to the camera - "I AM BEING HELD AS A PRISONER HERE" is written on the back of it. "It's great to see these old clips", said Matt, "But I know that my Mum - she's sat over there - is going to tell me off about how fat I am now."

Graeme Garden asked about Tom Baker's contribution to the series - "You're both Doctor Who fanatics" - and was corrected by David : "Just me - I'm the one with gay *taste*." Apparently they were encouraged to drop the voice-over narration completely by the script editor of their first TV series, Mark Gatiss : they were persuaded by Bob Mortimer that they would be crazy to lose him.

One of Graeme's favourite Little Britain characters is Angus McRooney, the flute playing hotelier, and he asked why the Scot wasn't in the new series. "Because it would have cost £6000 to refurbish the set", said Matt.

There was also some discussion about self-censorship : the Dafydd sketch in the first episode of the new series won't be shown on BBC1, because of one particular line that Ruth Madoc says to her son. "You can't say rimming at 9.30 on a Friday night".
