I came back from my weekend away to find that my VCR had not recorded "The Prisoner", "The Web of Fear", or "The Kneale Tapes". Instead I had Sky News for the relevant times on Friday and Saturday. This was the final straw.
My set-top box started playing up about two weeks ago, either freezing completely, turning itself on and off again, or resetting itself (and deleting the stored timers)spontaneously. Some research on the Digital Spy forums pinned the blame firmly on the Crystal Palace transmitter, which is apparently broadcasting test transmissions for an 8 day electronic programme guide. The software in the box is unable to cope with this, and by all accounts Goodmans had shown no inclination to transmit a software upgrade.
Today I scoured the flat for the receipt (about five months old now), and then the manual, and packed it all up and took it into Argos. I explained that the box had been working perfectly well before in the old town ; I didn't want a refund ; I just wanted a new box. They said they would have to check and see it could be repaired (I could have told them the answer to that one before they checked).
A couple of minutes later I collected a Phillips 1500 DTR box, for the princely sum of £15. Argos have secured my custom for, oh, the next decade at least.
